Landslide Susceptibility Maps

For the Landslide maps we used the Critical Rainfall Threshold Model on two study sites to better understand the limitations and issues that may arise with the model from different angles. The capital city of Tirana in Albania is the first site chosen. This site had several issues that the Willits site did not. Moslty it was a lack of data that was already avalible online. Therefore a lot of the data had to either be hand-crafted or calculated. This allowed for a test of the model in less than ideal circumstances and allowed for us to see what factors are heavily relied upon for the formula to work. Willits was a more ideal subject as it had a ton of data from the United States Government’s departments. This allowed for a test of the model with all the data provided by expert sources.

Tirana, Albania

All of the maps done for Tirana, Albania are done in the ETRS 1989 ALBANIA 2010 projection, as recommended from the Albanian Government’s GIS portal.

NOTE: Due to the issues finding an updated soil map of Albania, the soil data was gained from a 2001 soil map as described in the most recent blog. Therefore, the data and resolution are not equvilent to the Willits data, and needs more research to become better defined.

Willits, California, USA

All the maps for Willits, California were done in the NAD 1983 UTM Zone 10N.

Impact On Structures

Tirana, Albania

For structures we were only able to find correct data on road systems in Tirana so that is what we looked at. The roads were defined into seven catagories, National road, Railroad, Domestic Roads, Village Roads, Gravel roads, Seasonal roads, and Unclassified roads. The seasonal and unclassified roads only included one or two roads in the range we were looking at so they have been removed from the impact maps.

Due to the density of the roads we have produced a combined map as well as several maps looking at the specific catagory of roads.
